Oxidation-Reduction Potential, namely ORP, reflects the difference in the oxidation-reduction potential between the indicating electrode and the reference electrode in a liquid, and it can provide a comprehensive assessment of the oxidation-reduction state of the entire system. In a wastewater treatment system, a low ORP value indicates a high content of reducing substances or organic pollutants in the system, a low dissolved oxygen concentration, and a reducing environment. On the other hand, a high ORP value indicates a low concentration of organic pollutants in the wastewater, a high content of dissolved oxygen or oxidizing substances, and a dominant oxidizing environment.
In the past, oxidation-reduction water treatment technology was not precise enough in terms of control conditions, which not only wasted chemicals but also was unfriendly to the environment. Nowadays, with the help of ORP measuring instruments, using the ORP electrical signal as the basis for detection and control can significantly improve the control accuracy of oxidation-reduction water treatment technology, thereby enhancing the treatment effect. The detection principle of ORP is similar to that of pH detection. Many online pH detection instruments are equipped with dual channels, and one of them includes the ORP detection channel.
ORP is crucial for the automatic control of sewage treatment plants and precise anaerobic control. It can not only save energy, regulate the metabolic pathways of anaerobic microorganisms but also improve the treatment effect. Initially, oxidation-reduction potential was mainly used in the treatment of industrial wastewater, especially the wastewater generated from metal finishing, and later it was also widely applied in municipal sewage treatment plants.
There are various variable valence ions and dissolved oxygen in the sewage system, forming multiple oxidation-reduction electrode pairs. Through an ORP Meter, the oxidation-reduction potential of the sewage can be quickly detected without the need for sampling and measurement in a laboratory, which greatly shortens the laboratory process and improves work efficiency. In the sewage treatment process, the biodegradation of organic pollutants containing carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, etc., the hydrolysis and acidification of organic substances, nitrification and denitrification reactions, as well as biological anaerobic phosphorus release and aerobic phosphorus uptake, are all extremely important oxidation-reduction reactions.
